Advanced Leadership in Nursing Practice programme

The Advanced Leadership in Nursing Practice programme is designed to support registered nurses develop skills in leading and managing themselves and their teams to deliver excellent patient centred care.

 ÌÀÍ·ÌõÎÛÁÏ this programme

This unit is open to Registered Nurses working in any sector, including NHS or independent health and social care.

This unit aims to develop registered nurses’ leadership skills, equipping them with the knowledge, confidence and competencies required to lead teams, drive change, and enhance patient care in complex healthcare settings. It explores leadership theories, strategic decision-making, healthcare policy, and the impact of leadership on organisational culture and patient outcomes.

This unit will be delivered online over several months with 10 taught days. In addition to the taught sessions, there will be self-directed learning, and 
assessments which must be completed and passed, to receive a certificate of completion. This equates to 200 hours learning time for this unit in total.

Successful completion of the unit will gain you 20 credits at Level 7, accredited by Agored Cymru.

Learning outcomes

  1. Be able to apply leadership theories and models in the context of ÌÀÍ·ÌõÎÛÁÏ and healthcare.
  2. Understand how strategic decision-making and problem-solving skills can be applied to complex healthcare challenges.
  3. Be able to employ leadership knowledge and skills to influence organisational culture, team dynamics, and patient safety.
  4. Be able to lead and manage change effectively within healthcare settings.
  5. Be able to critically reflect on own leadership style and develop a personal leadership action plan.
  6. Be able to apply the ethical, legal, and professional responsibilities of nurse leaders.

Who is this programme suitable for?

This unit is open to Registered Nurses only, who hold current registration with the NMC. Suitable for registered nurses working in any sector, including NHS or independent health and social care. This programme is open to both RCN members and non-members.

On successful completion of the programme you will gain 20 credits at Level 7. 

Technology access:

All applicants will need access to a laptop or tablet with camera and microphone capability. Use of a mobile phone only will not be suitable.

Mode of delivery

This unit will be delivered online over several months with 10 taught days, on the following dates:

  • Day 8 – Wednesday 17 June 2026
  • Day 9 – Wednesday 1 July 2026
  • Day 10 – Wednesday 15 July 2026


In addition to the taught sessions, there will be self-directed learning, and assessments which must be completed and passed, to receive a certificate of completion.

Assessment 

The assessment will include a Professional Portfolio and Written assignment.

Assessment submission date: Thursday 24 September 2026.
